How basketball started

Basketball has become one of the worlds most known sport. Basketball started back in 1891 when a Canadian p.e. teacher wanted to keep the kids indoors during the winter. He added 13 rules to basketball. Which are basically the same rules we use today. The first public game of basketball was play in Springfield, Massachusetts on March 21, 1892. They played with peach baskets so when they scored the referee had to get the ball out of the basket. “I think it’s weird that they had to play with peach baskets,” says Matthew Hernandez.  When World War 1 broke out the American Expeditionary Force played basketball wherever they went. This really helped expand it. “I never knew that basketball started with a gym teacher wanting to play a sport indoors,” says Ruby Medina. The first professional league, NBA (National Basketball Team) was founded in 1898. This league did not last long, it ended in 1904. Around the 1920’s Eastern Basketball league, Metropolitan Basketball league, and American Basketball League were the main leagues. Basketball had been well known in America because of college Basketball. In the 1940’s the Nation Basketball Association was created. It merged with the National Basketball League. The NBA has become the most recognized basketball league in the world. “NBA games are my favorite sporting events,” says Juan Medina.
