The JV soccer team earned a 2–0 win over Canutillo in district play.
Early in the first half, Canutillo created two scoring opportunities during a counterattack. A shot from the wing went wide of the post, and a second attempt was cleared by defense inside the box.
“It was scary for a second because they were really attacking hard,” said Diego Castaneda, freshman midfielder. “But we stayed calm and trusted each other, and that helped us win the ball back.”
After regaining possession, the team focused on maintaining control of the ball. The adjustment led to a goal before halftime, giving them a 1–0 lead at the break.
Following halftime, the team increased its passing tempo and used more of the field. The team recorded longer possessions and limited Canutillo’s opportunities to counter.
“In the second half, we connected our passes way better,” said Angel Perez, freshman center back. “We stopped rushing and started moving the ball around, and that gave us more possession.”
The increased possession resulted in a second goal, extending the lead to 2–0. Canutillo attempted to respond late in the match, but the midfield and defense prevented a goal.
“We knew they were going to come at us again,” said Andrew Borrego, sophomore midfielder. “But our defense stayed locked in, and our midfield helped a lot by keeping possession.”
The win moves the team forward in district competition.
