Our school held a blood drive last Friday in the gym to help local hospitals and patients in need. The event was organized by the student council and open to students and staff who were eligible to donate.
Throughout the day, students stopped by during free periods and lunch to donate blood or help volunteers. For some students, it was their first time giving blood, which made the experience a little nerve-racking.
“I was kind of scared at first because I didn’t know what to expect,” said junior Elena Dominguez. “But once I actually did it, it wasn’t as bad as I thought, and it felt good knowing I was helping someone.”
The goal of the blood drive was to collect enough blood to support hospitals in the area. By the end of the day, organizers said the school had a good turnout, and more students participated than expected.
Senior Ethan Miller, who helped hand out snacks and water to donors afterward, said the event showed how students can support their community.
“Not everyone can donate, but there are other ways to help,” he said. “Volunteering still makes a difference.”
Events like the blood drive also helped students learn more about why donating blood is important, even if they were unable to donate themselves.
“Some students who didn’t donate said the blood drive helped raise awareness about why donating blood is important,” senior Fernando Larios said.
