School choirs performed on Nov. 19 at Bowie High School. One of the groups that participated was the choir. The performance allowed choirs from across the district to come together and showcase their abilities.
Choir president Nicholas Pedigo said the group’s singing went well overall, especially for an early performance in the year.
“I think our singing was pretty good,” Pedigo said. “It’s hard not to get nervous, even for people who have been in the program for multiple years.”
Pedigo said this was his second time performing at the event. He explained that the choir felt different from last year because there were more members, including younger singers. He said older choir members helped support the younger students during the performance.
“I think having some of the older people being able to help the younger ones was very good,” Pedigo said.
Pedigo also said the choir could improve on stage demeanor, such as smiling more and showing enjoyment while singing. He added that being quieter off stage while other groups perform is another area for improvement.
Choir member Hector Alvarado said the performance went smoothly and was better organized than in previous years.
“It was pretty good,” Alvarado said. “It was a lot smoother than last year, and everything ran a lot quicker.”
Alvarado said the event was a showcase for district choirs to display their talent.
“It’s a showcase of all of the district choirs and seeing what they can do,” Alvarado said.
Alvarado said the group spent a lot of time preparing for the performance.
“Coach Weaver made sure that we had everything memorized and perfected to the best of our abilities,” Alvarado said.
Alvarado added that while he enjoyed the music performed, the choir could improve by choosing stronger music pieces in the future.
“I did enjoy the music pieces that we had this year, but I feel like we could have had better,” Alvarado said.
Choir director Eric Weaver said the performance went well overall, despite some technical distractions.
“The electronic recording didn’t treat us well,” Weaver said. “It got a little loud on stage, so it was distracting, but other than that, the kids sang well.”
Weaver said improvement comes mainly from experience and consistent practice.
“In order to improve, you have to do it over and over again,” Weaver said.
Weaver said preparation is an important part of music and that performances are the result of daily rehearsal.
“The preparation is everything,” Weaver said.
Weaver said his favorite part of the performance was the beginning of the second song, when he noticed students becoming more expressive.
“I could see faces, they were expressive and performing,” Weaver said.
