Imagine, It’s the first day of school again. You attend a high school in Texas, and you’re informed about the state’s new policy regarding no phones or any personal electronic devices in class. For some this may be devastating, for others it may be beneficial.
An interview done with a student at a Texas school talked about this new law and here’s what he had to say. He started by saying he disagreed with the law and how it wasn’t fair to take it away if he bought it. “I think we should use it in class because we were given it to use and be entertained.” He stated people were so used to being on and developed a connection with their phones it would be too much trouble not being on it. “People will just find other ways to use it,” he said which affects teachers and students.
The way he talked and expressed himself seemed like he was talking for every student when recommending a change in the rule. Not every student seemed to think this way, another student who attended the same school agreed with the new law. He stated how he actually pay attention more because there was no one to text. “No one can use their phones, so I don’t need to,” the student said. He explained that the class was more social, and he was able to make more friends without being able to use his phone. A local teacher who had taught several grades happened to give similar points; saying things like she saw her students pay attention more and interact in activities more. She was able to teach more freely without students being distracted on phones and not paying attention.
The new policy has already taken place and students who are caught with their phones will have them confiscated. “It might be tuff at first” the second student said, “but maybe it’s for the best.” The state has yet to hear these complaints so, change isn’t expected.
