Students are being reminded about a campus safety rule that says students are not allowed to open external doors to let others inside the building. School officials say the rule is meant to keep the campus safe, but some students say it can sometimes cause confusion during the school day.
The rule requires students to enter the school through designated entrances instead of side or back doors. According to administrators, this helps staff keep track of who is entering the building and prevents unauthorized people from coming onto campus.
Assistant principal Johanna Sherman explained that the rule is mainly about safety.
“We want to make sure everyone on campus is supposed to be here,” Sherman said. “If students open outside doors for others, we lose control of who is coming into the building.”
Some students say they understand the rule but admit it can be difficult to follow in certain situations. Sophomore Pierre Ramirez said he has seen classmates try to open doors for friends who forgot their IDs or arrived late.
“Sometimes people knock on the door because they got locked out,” Ramirez said. “But we’re not supposed to open it, so most of the time we just tell them to go to the front office.”
Junior Ivan Martinez said the rule can feel strict, but she understands the reason behind it.
“It can seem rude not to open the door for someone,” Martinez said. “But the school is just trying to make sure everyone stays safe.”
Teachers also support the policy because it helps maintain campus security. English teacher Adam Ward said that even small actions like opening a side door can create safety problems.
“If one person opens a door, someone who doesn’t belong on campus could get inside,” Lopez said. “It’s better for everyone if we follow the same rule.”
School staff say students who see someone trying to enter through an external door should direct them to the main entrance or notify a staff member. Administrators hope reminding students about the rule will help prevent problems and keep the campus secure.
As the school continues to focus on safety, officials say following simple rules like using the correct entrances can make a big difference for everyone at school.
