Students have noticed an increase in restroom lockouts during the school day. The
school’s restroom lockdowns have raised concerns about student access and
communication.
Over the past several weeks, multiple restrooms on campus have been locked for
extended periods. Some restrooms remain open at certain times, such as during passing
periods or during lunch; access is more limited than in previous months.
The policy was enforced due to ongoing problems with restroom misuse and maintenance.
Locking restrooms at certain times is intended to reduce vandalism, improve cleanliness,
and ensure student safety.
“I think students abuse the power to use the restroom, like going in and not actually using
it,” senior Aiden Bravo said. “They probably most likely go 0in there to probably do stuff they
aren’t supposed to be doing or maybe get on their phones or just ditching class.”

Some students have made concerns that the lockouts have made it more difficult to
manage basic needs during the school day, particularly during longer class periods.
“Anytime I need to use the restroom, I would have to wait for someone to get back,” senior Layla Angiano said. “It takes a while for me to find a restroom that is unlocked and able to
use, which is unhealthy for me.”
Teachers have also been affected by the change. Students having to use the restroom miss
class time by trying to find an open restroom.
“It makes things difficult because I notice that juniors and seniors don’t really abuse the
restroom pass,” teacher Helena Faiello-Simpson said. “But if I send them to the restroom
and they can’t get in, they have to find somewhere else in the building if they can.”
The lockdown limits restroom access at certain times throughout the day. Administrators
noted that certain restrooms stay open, specifically to the one in A hall, and that
adjustments may be made if issues continue.
Currently, there is no plan to change the restroom lockout schedule.
