Things Fall Apart Book Review

Things Fall Apart is Chinua Achebe’s first novel. Most consider it his best novel. It is about the arrival of Europeans to an east Nigerian tribe in the late 1900s. The novel focuses on the life of Okonkwo. Okonkwo is an Ibo man and also a wrestling champion. He is greatly feared and highly respected throughout his tribe. The beginning of the novel introduces his personal life and culture. Later in the novel, Okonkwo and his family is banned from their tribe for seven years. I would explain why but, that would spoil a big part of the book. While his family is in exile, Christians and missions are coming to settle. Going back after the seven years Okonkwo is shocked at the sight. The story follows him coming to terms with his former way of life being erased. His childhood, values, culture is gone. This is really one of my favorite books. It really makes you think about a lot of things. You really start to sympathize with Okonkwo throughout the story. The end was a shocker and really left me in tears. I would recommend this book to a lot of individuals. I really think Chapin’s English teachers should include the book into their curriculum. 10/10
