Pick of the Flicks: “The Greatest Showman”

 

“The Greatest Showman” is a showcase of talent by its starring cast: Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, and Zendaya. Hugh Jackman portrays P.T Barnum, an entrepreneur who left his imprint in the industry of entertainment through his controversial fanatic idea of redefining the circus.

Hugh Jackman was critically acclaimed for his role, with a Golden Globe nomination for not only his outstanding acting, but also his phenomenal dancing and singing. However, Jackman is not a stranger to the world of musicals as he was nominated for an academy award in 2013 for his performance in “Les Misérables”, a musical based on 19th century France.  His fellow co-star, Zac Efron is also familiar to playing a starring character in a musical, as his role as Troy Bolton in Disney’s High School Musical Series displayed his singing ability and dancing skills.

The film contains eleven catchy and heartfelt songs that were composed by Benji Pasek and Justin Paul who composed songs for the Academy Award Winning musical; La La Land. Clearly this duo has maintained their winning streak with The Greatest Showman, as they won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song “This is Me.” The soundtrack of this movie is undoubtedly a toe tapper and tearjerker for any musical fanatic out there.

Overall, the Greatest Showman integrates the many aspects that make a musical memorable with, outstanding musical compositions, a stellar cast, remarkable choreography, and a heartfelt message integrated within the storyline.  These combined aspects make the film perfect for all age groups and anyone that might be searching for a film that provides something different from the cliché romantic or success stories.
