In 2025, most movies in theaters are sequels, remakes, or reboots. Many students are realizing that there are little to no new ideas.
Big movie studios keep making movies from stories people already know. They make superhero movies, live-action remakes, and sequels to old movies. Some students are tired of it.
“It’s like I’ve already seen the movie before,” said Dereem Mitchell.
“All the trailers look the same,” said Patrick Noriega.
Last year, theaters were showing Inside Out 2, Despicable Me 4, Beetlejuice 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine. Disney is also working on a Moana live-action remake, even though the animated version came out less than 10 years ago.
According to screenwriter Gregory Bernsteinm, Movie studios do this because it’s safer. They think people will go watch a movie if they already know the characters or story. It helps them make more money.
“People are still going to see the next Marvel movie,” said Rafael Nieto. “Even if it’s kind of boring.”
There are still some original movies, but they are harder to find. Some are on streaming apps, not in theaters. Most people aren’t willing to spend $10 a month watching original movies.
“The best movies I saw this year were online,” said Noel Estrada. “They felt different and more creative.”
Some original movies came out this year, like Sinners, a mystery thriller with a new story and cast, and Mickey 17, a sci-fi film by Bong Joon-ho. Although not coming from a franchise, some students say they felt more interesting than most sequels.
Some directors still make new and original movies. But for now, many teens say movies feel the same way. They hope to see new and exciting movies in theaters again.
