El Paso Electric is asking state regulators to approve a rate increase that could bill customers with an extra $22 on their monthly electric bills. If approved, that’s nearly a 19% jump in costs for the average residential customer.
The company says the hike is needed to help cover $1.55 billion in investments made since 2020 , including new power plants, solar energy projects, and upgrades to infrastructure. While El Paso Electric say these improvements are necessary for long-term reliability and growth, many residents are concerned about the short-term impact on their money.
“With them raising the price I don’t think my parents will be able to afford to have electricity and pay for other important things” said sophomore Zaeyden Ramirez.
This especially affects students and families already trying to save money. Extra utility costs can mean fewer resources for school supplies, internet access, or even safe home environments for studying. Some students who get rides to be taken to school may face issues with transportation, and even in some cases students are purposely not taken to school in order to help their family too.
Community members have started a petition opposing the hike, and local officials, including members of El Paso’s City Council, have expressed concerns as well. The proposal still needs to go through a regulatory review, so there’s a chance for negotiations or adjustments.
Mayor Renard Johnson raised concerns about the effect of El Paso Electric’s proposed rate hike on household power costs. Johnson expressed strong concern about the proposed increase, warning it could heavily impact El Paso residents due to its significant preliminary estimates.
In the meantime, El Paso Electric is encouraging customers to save energy in order to lower their monthly costs for electricity, but many say that’s not enough to be able to pay for bills.
