Dust storms are staring to happen a lot more frequently. These storms, which are mainly caused by high winds sweeping sand and or dust across the city, can affect air quality, and pose challenges for many.
Junior Joe Hernandez shared how these dust storms are affecting him.
“All of these dust storms are really annoying, during school when it happened, I was walking outside and the wind started to pick up and a whole bunch of sand got in my face,” Joe said. “It’s frustrating because it was hard to play sports with the low visibility, and it was messing with my allergies.”
Parents are concerned about the safety of their children during these storms. Many have started picking up their kids early to avoid having them deal with the dust and wind.
Dust storms are not just a nusicance they are part of an environmental issue. Experts say that these storms are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change, which is increasing temperatures and altering weather patterns.
A local mother Aliyah Greene expands more on how this impacts her day.
“These dust storms are becoming more intense, and this is not so great for my kid because she gets sick easily,” Greene said. “If I have time I try to drop and pick her up from school, and make sure she is covered. I know it’s just part of living here, but it really has negative effects.”
Sophomore Andre Davis expresses his feelings.
“To be honest it’s not big of a deal to me, I wish they would have canceled school because of how orange the sky was.” Andre said. “But it kind of looked cool like we were on mars, the downside of these storms is all the sand. Some had got in my mouth, and I was coughing a lot.”
