School districts in El Paso are facing financial challenges causing concerns about potential layoffs and other budget cuts according to KFOX 14.
“It will affect Chapin I just hope they don’t lay a lot of people off,” English teacher Angelica Gutierrez said. “They might cut fine arts and female sports.”
Students are concerned that their fine arts and sport activity might get cut or under funded.
“If all fundings cut then a lot of kids will not be able to pay for band,” junior Dominic Anderson said. “If fine arts are getting cut then the sports should to.”
“They have to go some where else to do something you’re interested in,” sophomore Kayla Creel said. “Sports and fine arts are important to in our history.”
El Paso ISD has updated its Destination District Redesign (DDR) proposal to address an urgent financial crisis and avoid severe consequences that could jeopardize the district’s ability to provide high-quality education for all students according to EPISD.
“Doesn’t make a lot of senses they should look at other things to cut,” science teacher Dr. Rob Rice said. “I think there being fewer classes and larger classroom sizes will cause more confusion by the way it runs.”
