Voting for the first time is an important step for students. According to the article “Should Children Vote,” making decisions at a young age that will affect their lives and future creates different perspectives on the situation.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for students to be able to vote,” freshman Lailoni Hernandez said. “It creates more diversity and a different audience than just older people.”
As students near the end of high school, voting gives them a chance to take part in important choices and learn more responsibility.
“Since most of the people voting are seniors, I think it can help them be more independent as they are about to finish high school,” freshman Priscilla Salazar said.
Other students are not eligible to vote.
“I feel that the students aren’t mature enough to know about politics and vote,” freshman Yamileth Carrillo said. “They’re not even out of high school yet.”
According to the article “Youth Who Learned about Voting in High School More Likely to become Informed and Engaged Voters,” the decision should depend on the student’s readiness and if they feel prepared to be involved in something that could alter their future.
“In the end I think it’s up to the student to decide if they are ready to vote or not,” Priscilla said.
