Lack of sleep affects school performance
Not getting enough sleep can negatively impact a child’s health. Research shows that sleep deprivation is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, obesity, and other health problems. Children who do not get enough sleep have a higher risk for many health problems, poor mental health, and injuries.
They are also more likely to have attention and behavior problems, which can contribute to poor academic performance in school. There are a lot of reasons why kids aren’t getting enough sleep these days , staying up late to watch TV or play video games, being on social media till all hours of the night, needing to stay up to finish homework or do extracurricular activities.
Not getting enough sleep can affect a child’s immune system by decreasing the cells which help us fight infections and increasing the cells that create inflammation.
“Kids get really cranky when they’re low on sleep,” said Sarah Misicka, secretary to principal at Borron Elementary. “They perform better at tasks when they’re energized and feed.”
Insomnia can be a symptom of psychiatric disorders, like anxiety and depression, anxiety, and even suicidal ideation.
“Sleep is a very important thing to me,” freshman Isaya Rios said. “If I didn’t get any sleep the night before Im not going to go on the court.”
Students have to choose over sleep, social life , or studying. It’s often said you have to choose two of these three S’s.
“I wouldn’t give them my a hundred percent. I wouldn’t play to my full compatibility,” Isaya said.
Dr. Joseph Segapelli, A doctor for young children and adults said “getting into a scheduled sleep isn’t always easy for everyone.”
“You have to think about the things everyone does, work , school , take care of their babies,” Dr. Segapelli said. “Sometimes it’s not easy to just fall asleep. Which is totally understandable but I think that you shouldn’t put on too much than you could handle in a day. That would just lead to stress and overworking yourself.
