2023-2024 Cheer tryouts.

This was the flyer that was put around the school to give all of the needed information that the students need to know incase they tryout.

Out of the 26 students that tried out 16 students made the varsity cheerleading squad. There were not enough people left over to make a JV team, they are doing another set of tryouts for the JV team in May.

“Most people that tried out did not check off to be put in the JV team if they did not make the varsity so at this current moment there is no JV team,” junior Desert-Rain Martin said. “The new coach is making a new tryout date somewhere in May, so that there could potentially be a JV team next year.”

The tryouts for cheer lasted a long time, they ended later, and parents were being called late at night to be informed about their children making the team.

“The tryouts lasted until 8:15 PM, everyone that was trying out went one by one, so they were very time consuming,” Desert-rain said. “They told me that parents were getting called at like 11 PM to be informed that their kids made the team, I think that was a little too late.”

Many of the varsity cheerleaders are incoming freshman that used to be the coaches’ old cheerleaders.

“Our new coach is from Nolan Middle School; she brought a lot of her old cheerleaders and almost all of them made the team,” Desert-Rain said.

The new season will be having new uniforms and new pompoms so there has been a significant price increase.

“We have to pay 2,500 so we can get all of the things that we are going to need,” first-year Aliya Cano said. “We are getting like 3 uniforms, and they are going to be completely different.”

The uniforms that they are getting for the following school year will be completely different because they are getting a new designer.

“The new designer that we are getting for our uniforms is the coaches brother,” Desert-Rain said. “He has designed uniforms before but for like cheer competitions not like high school cheer, so I am excited to see these new uniforms.”

Although there is being new things added the price increase has stopped students from trying out for the cheer squad.

“The price increase is crazy to me, it almost doubled,” said sophomore Londyn Meade. “I don’t think It would be a smart financial choice for me to tryout, I think I’ll join a different sport next year, but I will for sure miss it.”
