Students disagree on rules for ripped jeans

According to the student agenda “The purpose of our campus dress code is to minimize distractions”. “The ‘torn or worn clothing look’ is not allowed if skin is visible above the knee.”

“Students are always getting sent down to the office during class because of the rips and how they’re supposedly causing a distraction,” sophomore Biviana Garcia said. “If anything, I think this is causing more of a distraction during class time because teachers stop instruction to address the situation.”

At least 10 students have said that rips in people’s jeans do not cause a distraction to be them at all.

“I think it mainly just disturbs the staff,” freshman Mark Duggan said.

“I like to wear ripped jeans because they make me feel confident and comfortable,” sophomore Gabe Johnson said. “It gives my legs some air throughout the school day.”

Students like freshman Julian Ontiveros has seen more girls get dress coded for ripped jeans than guys.

“Some of my friends have even said they have gotten their jeans taken away,” Julian said.

Students are tired of this dress code rule and the consequences that come with it.

“There are limits when it comes to consequences, and I think the staff is doing too much and are overreacting,” junior Bella Villalobos said.

Students have said that if there were to be a protest or petition for banning the ripped jeans dress code, they would participate in it

“I’m down to participate as long as it doesn’t disrupt my class time,” Julian said.

Schools in the district have had protest that occur on their campuses and viewed on local news and social media platforms.

“If there was a protest or petition, I would want my voice to be heard,” Biviana said. “We should be able to express our style and feel comfortable at school without being objectified.”
