Library Due Dates
A student walks into the library to check out a book for the week, but when the they reach the library, the librarian tells them that they owe money for a long overdue book the student forgot about.
When students check out books, sometimes they can forget about them. The books becoming forgotten within their bags. And as the due date passes, the library starts fining.
“I just keep forgetting,” senior Josh Rubacapra said. “With all the work and assignments I’m busy with, it makes it hard to keep up with everything, and the books end up being abandoned in my bag for weeks.”
Some teachers have come up with ways to help students remember about their books. To prevent library debt from further increasing.
“Maybe the school should enforce a reading policy,” German teacher Olga Garza said.” That way, during a certain amount of time in class, students will be forced to read and remember they had books.”
But other teachers have different ideas on how to handle the problem.
“The school could just announce a reminder during morning announcements,” English teacher Mario Gomez said. “I mean, it’s not that hard to remind people about stuff.”
While many debate the issue, there are students who don’t care about the problem at all.
“The library doesn’t fine that much.” senior Blake Suiter said. “You could literally have your book overdue for a week and end up only owing a quarter.”
