Baseball players and coaches are preparing for an important weekend as tryouts begin for the upcoming season. Tryouts give players the chance to show their skills and allow coaches to evaluate talent, effort, and teamwork.
“Tryouts are a big opportunity for players to show what they can do,” baseball coach Troy Pavoggi said.
The coaches feel confident about many returning players this season. Several athletes have played together for years, which has helped them build strong chemistry and trust on the field.
“We feel pretty confident with the players that we’ve got on the team,” Pavoggi said.
During tryouts, players are graded on important skills such as hitting, base running, defense, bunting, and throwing. Coaches carefully watch as athletes catch fly balls, field grounders, and make strong throws to the cutoff.
“We graded players on hitting, base running, defense, and bunting,” Pavoggi said.
To stay organized, the coaching staff created a detailed plan before tryouts began. They decided which skills to test and how each player would be evaluated. Coaches also greeted players individually to help them feel more comfortable and confident.
“We had our plan together and knew what we were going to grade them on,” Pavoggi said.
Players also prepared for months leading up to tryouts. sophomore Danny Hernandez said confidence was the most important part of his mindset. He focused on staying positive and doing his best.
“If you’re not confident, you can’t accomplish anything,” Danny said.
Danny said he trained for about three months before tryouts by hitting off a tee, going to the gym, and practicing with his parents.
“I prepared about three months in advance with my dad and at the gym,” Danny said.
Senior Nick Pedigo said his mindset changed this year compared to past seasons. Instead of feeling nervous, he chose to enjoy the experience and have fun with his teammates.
“I was a lot more open and having more fun this year,” Nick said.
Pedigo said his goals for the season go beyond winning games. As a senior, he wants to represent his school, family, and teammates in a positive way during his final year.
“It’s about representing everyone connected to this program,” Nick said.
As tryouts continue, both players and coaches are excited about the season ahead. With strong preparation, teamwork, and positive attitudes, the baseball team hopes to have a successful year.
“I’m excited to see what this season brings,” Nick said.
