Poetry at Chapin

Chelly Herrera is seeking to start a poetry club.
The idea came about when a former student petitioned her to start a poetry club after previous
failed attempts at the student’s current school.
“She wrote so beautifully and so passionately, I couldn’t deny her,” Herrera said.
The goal of the club is to awaken a love of poetry in students who don’t realize how thoroughly
it influences their lives.
“There’s some kind of disconnect between music and poetry when essentially it’s very similar,”
Herrera said, “So just to have students understand on that level and have the same passion would
be awesome.”
Senior April Lang believes that the club will be a great chance for education for all students.
“It will give me an opportunity to expand my knowledge and do something fun in my free time,”
April said.
Beyond just fostering a love of prose, the club will also members to compete at the national scale
for monetary prizes.
“Poetry is an element that we have to cover in English at every level, but this particular program
allows for students to pursue it in a way that it’s not attached to a grade and oftentimes they find
their voice.”
