Student Council hosts a monthly general meeting on the last Wednesday of the month. This month they hosted on Feb. 26, the last full week before Spring-break.
“We wanted to have a nice way to go on to your break, do spring-plant-based projects,” senior secretary Jonathan Perez said.
Committees present in this month’s meeting: E & E (Enviromental & Energy), DASH (Drugs Alcohol Safety and Health), Fine Arts, Community Service, P & P (Pride & Patriotism), and Athletes.
Two weeks prior to the meeting, student council starts brainstorming ideas on activities for their committee to do. The DASH Committee did mindfulness UNO, E & E Committee is using reusable shirts and making them into tote bags, Fine Arts Committee is doing charades, and Community Service is doing little plants while reusing cardboard for the Children’s Hospital.
Senior Community Service Executive Officer Audrey Lopez shares her reasoning of choosing a bouquet making activity. Student Council has a partnership with the Children’s Hospital.
“I think it’s a good way of brightening up the children’s day, by giving them a little surprise, and I think the flowers are a good way to embrace spring and how the new season is coming up,” Audrey said.
The activity of “Mindfulness UNO” is when you draw a card, depending on the color, you read a fact from that section, the red section is facts about teen dating violence and blue section is facts about drug and alcohol awareness.
“I wanted the student body to be able to learn something about Drugs-Alcohol Safety Awareness, while making it fun,” DASH Executive Officer Enrique Ambriz said.
Junior E & E Officer Jaime Corral had an idea for making tote-bags.
“So that people can have reusable bags, so that they don’t have to keep buying bags,” Jaime said.
He also said that they choose to use t-shirts to make these bags since it was from something they already have.
“We vow to uphold our privies of community service, and we just want to give back to the people,” senior Treasurer Mark Duggan said.
When collaborating with people outside of student council they collaborate with their partnerships, email, social media, or text to engage with the community.
“We could start getting more people to show up for meetings,” Mark said.
Student Council are the ones that host senior events and oncoming Freshman events, as well as homecoming/prom, and most community events/service on campus. They also try informing the campus about important things like the dangers of drinking and driving, and mental health awareness, self-esteem, and pride.

Students activities manager Julie Oshiro has been doing this for nine years as student council advisor.
“We’re really behind the scenes, so a lot of times people don’t recognize that student council is the group that puts on everything,” Oshiro said. “It really is an honor for all of us to serve and give back to our campus in a capacity that is of servitude.”
