On Sunday, February 2, the 67th GRAMMY awards were hosted in Los Angeles, California at the Crypto.com arena. Beyoncé won the award for album of the year. She was nominated against Sabrina Carpenter, Taylor Swift, Charlie XCX, Chappell Roan, and Billie Eilish. Though, people are split upon whether Beyoncé or Billie Eilish should have won the award.
According to Spotify, Beyoncé’s album “Cowboy Carter” has over 1 billion streams and Billie Eilish’s album “HIT ME HARD AND SOFT” has over 5 billion streams.
“Billie’s album had more streams so I do not know how Beyoncé won,” freshman Sol Arreola said. “Tell me when you have listened to Cowboy Carter besides one song that went viral on TikTok.”
Based on “Joshonthatsax”, the Grammys are not a popularity contest.
“The Grammys is not just about how popular the album is,” freshman Priscilla Salazar said. “It is about the artists talent.”
Grammy winners and nominees are decided by the Recording Academy’s Voting membership.
“I personally think Billie should have won,” freshman Harper Krattiger said. “But I know that the awards are not decided by the fans, but other people.”
Streams are how many times a listener listens to a song.
“I think streaming numbers should play a bigger role,” freshman Ariela Saucedo said. “It shows what the people are actually listening to and enjoying.”
Beyoncé and P Diddy controversy.
“Beyoncé has had a lot of rumors spread lately with Diddy,” Harper said. “So I think that is why people think she does not deserve the award.”
Beyoncé’s past albums are the genre pop and hip-hop but “Cowboy Carter” is labeled as country.
“Her album was unique and experimental,” Priscilla said. “It is not just about the popularity, but the art and creativity.”
No matter who won, Harper finds both artists talented.
“At the end of the day, both Billie and Beyoncé are incredible artists,” Harper said. “Winning or not, their music is loved by many people.”
