Students in schools are using AI to complete their schoolwork, like generating essays, and solving math problems. Kids think it’s just an easier way to get their work done, but others believe it is a form of cheating which doesn’t allow them to actually learn.
Emily Masterson, a dual credit English teacher believes it can be a useful tool but has concerns.
“I think it takes away from how the students will learn, it’s not allowing them to use their critical thinking skills for when they must do essays,” Masterson said. “AI can help with structure, but it is easily noticeable when you can tell they used it.”
Senior Jaquavius Jackson shared how AI helps and benefits his work.
“Usually when I use AI for schoolwork, it is not to cheat it’s mainly for me to get ideas on how to do certain things and learn more,” Jaquavius said. “But it is also a faster way for me to complete work, since it gives an explanation on how you get the answer.”
Teachers have mixed feelings about students using AI. Some believe it is a tool that can guide students when they don’t have access to other help around them. Tevin Caldwell, a world history teacher and coach, does understand why students use AI.
“Students use AI because it is a quick and easy way for them to get work done,” Caldwell said. “But when they turn in work, they usually don’t understand the concept. So, when I ask them a question about it, they just sit there and not respond.”
Many students are relying heavily on AI, even when it answers wrong, they still use it. Which proves how students lack motivation when it comes down to having to do the work independently.
“This is why teachers are here,” Caldwell said. “We are available to help students understand the concept without them having to look up every question or answer.”
